Neoprene vs. Breathable Waders

If you love the outdoors and being in water, whether you’re going surf fishing or getting ready for duck hunting season, you’ll need the proper protection for your body. A good quality pair of waders is an important investment, which means it’s critical to choose the right material to meet your needs. You also need something that will afford you the comfort and durability you need.

Long story short, you’ll need of some kind of wader, but you may be wondering which kind: neoprene or breathable? There are advantages to each style, and depending on your need, climate, and hobbies – both may be necessary.

Main Differences

First off, what’s the main difference between neoprene and breathable waders?

  • Neoprene waders are comprised of neoprene rubber material that is filled with tiny nitrogen bubbles. This means that they are physically tough and have insulative properties that provide you with inherent warmth. However, they are also heavier and do not allow for excess moisture (sweat) to escape.
  • Breathable waders can provide a more flexible fit, and while they may cost a bit more, they can be a great option when breathability and mobility are most important. They are lightweight and are designed to draw moisture away from the body, making for a comfortable wading experience.

Neoprene Waders

  • Great for the hunting season
  • Cost a bit less than breathable waders
  • Good for extremely cold water
  • Thicker material provides durability and insulation
  • Ideal when standing in cold water for an extended period

Neoprene waders have been the industry standard for decades because of their reliable, waterproof nature. Comprised of neoprene rubber material they still provide the most warmth. While neoprene waders will keep you dry any time of the year, they are not recommended for warmer temperatures or if you will be involved in walking long distances or extended strenuous activity.

Breathable Waders

  • Breathable
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable
  • Easier to get on and off
  • Most versatile

Today, breathable waders represent the new standard for surf fishing waders amongst surf fishermen, hunters and anyone else who plans to be in or around the water. This material wicks moisture away from the body, keeping you as dry as possible. Breathable fabrics allow for the escape of water vapor through pores in the fabric membrane. Water molecules, being larger, are prevented from entering the same membrane, keeping you completely dry.

Breathable waders are lightweight and provide both comfort and mobility.  They can be worn with just a pair of socks and shorts in warm weather or can be layered up underneath for cold weather.  They provide the greatest versatility for year-round use whether fishing, hunting or working in the water.
